A book of profound scholarship and concise pedagogy, The Essential Talmud succinctly describes the Talmud's history, structure, and methodology. It summarizes the Talmud's main principles, demonstrates its contemporary relevance, and captures the spirit of this unique and paradoxical sacred text as a human expression of divine law.   The "Sepher Yetzirah," or "Book of Formation," is perhaps the oldest philosophical treatise which is yet extant in the Hebrew language. The great interest which has been evinced of late years in the Hebrew Kabalah, and the modes of thought and doctrine allied to it, has induced me to translate this volume from the original Hebrew texts, and to collate Brand: Theophania Publishing.

SEPHER YETZIRAH OR THE BOOK OF CREATION W.W. Wescott, tr. () CHAPTER 1. In two and thirty most occult and wonderful paths of wisdom did JAH the Lord of Hosts engrave his name: God of the armies of Israel, ever-living God, merciful and gracious, sublime, dwelling on high, who inhabiteth eternity.

The Sefer Yetzirah, or The Book of Creation, was written approximately 3, BCE, and was the first Kabbalistic book to be written. It was written prior to Rabbi The Yezira book Zohar, or The Book of Splendor. This version of The Sefer Yetzirah contains three by: Sefer Yetzira, (Hebrew: “Book of Creation”), oldest known Hebrew text on white magic and cosmology; it contends that the cosmos derived from the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet and from the 10 divine numbers (sefirot).

Taken together, they were said to comprise the “32 paths of secret wisdom” by which God created the universe.

The Sepher Yetzirah, or Book of Formation, although very short, is probably the most important of the Kabalistic texts. Its secrets were passed on in the Hebrew oral tradition until it was written down in the 2nd century b.c.e.

The “Sepher Yetzirah,” although this name means “The Book of Formation,” is not in any sense a narrative of Creation, or a substitute Genesis, but is an ancient and instructive philosophical The Yezira book upon one aspect of the origin of the universe and mankind; an aspect at once archaic and essentially Hebrew.

Instructive for the study of the development of Jewish mysticism is the Book of Jubilees written around the time of King John Hyrcanus. It refers to mysterious writings of Jared, Cain, and Noah, and presents Abraham as the renewer, and Levi as the permanent guardian, of these ancient writings.

The Sepher Yetzirah, or ‘Book of Formation’, is acknowledged as being one of the most important kabbalistic texts. Its brief note-like style has made it one of the most commented upon works in the field of kabbalah. The concepts contained within it detail the basic acts of creation through the use of the Hebrew letters.

Sefer, Book of Formation, or Book of Creation is the title of the earliest extant book on Jewish esotericism, although some early commentators treated it as a treatise on mathematical and linguistic theory as opposed to Kabbalah.

Yetzirah is more literally translated as "Formation"; the word Briah is used for "Creation". The Sepher Yetzirah or Book of Formation is perhaps the oldest rabbinical treatise of Kabbalistic philosophy which is still extant.

The Sepher Yetzirah, according to Adolph Franck, differs from other sacred books in that it does not explain the world and the phenomena of which it is the stage by leaning on the idea of God or by setting itself up as the interpreter of the supreme will.

This ancient work rather reveals God by estimating His manifold handiwork. Notably, he wrote 3 books on Jewish Meditation and commentaries on both the Sefer Yetzirah and the Book Bahir.

His Sefer Yetzirah provides considerable commentary and explanation of the text, though much of it is still a mystery--so don't expect a complete exposition of a definitive sort.
